Your doctor may prescribe a tooth extraction for many different reasons, such as large cavities, severe periodontitis, or a fracture that cannot be repaired. In addition, the doctor may prescribe tooth extraction to prepare for orthodontic treatment.

Removing a tooth can lead to problems related to the ability to chew, bite, and move the tooth, greatly affecting your oral health. To avoid these risks, the team of doctors at GDC will discuss possible alternatives to tooth extraction, as well as options for replacing the extracted tooth.

 TOOTH EXTRACTION PROCESS

– At the time of tooth extraction, the doctor will give local anesthesia to the tooth, jawbone and gum area around the tooth that needs to be extracted.

– During the tooth extraction process, the doctor will have to use force to remove the tooth from the socket. However, you will not feel pain because you have been anesthetized beforehand.

– If you feel pain at any time during the tooth extraction process, let us know right away!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CARE AFTER TOOTH EXTRACTION

After tooth extraction, the bleeding and healing process is really important. Be sure to keep the gauze pad in your mouth continuously for 30-45 minutes after tooth extraction. If bleeding or oozing continues, apply another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. You may have to do this several times to get the blood flowing properly.

Once a blood clot has formed, it is important not to disturb or dislodge the clot. Do not rinse your mouth vigorously, suck on a straw, smoke, drink alcohol or chew food next to the extracted tooth for 72 hours. These activities can dissolve blood clots and hinder wound healing. Limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours, as this increases blood pressure and may cause more bleeding at the site of the extracted tooth.

After tooth extraction, you may feel some pain and swelling. GDC will provide ice packs to minimize swelling. Please take the medicine as prescribed by your doctor for the prescribed time even if the signs and symptoms of the infection are gone and contact GDC in case you still feel pain and discomfort!

Remember to eat soft and nutritious foods a few days after tooth extraction. You can eat and drink normally as soon as you feel comfortable. It is important to maintain oral hygiene habits, including brushing and flossing. This will speed up the healing process and maintain oral health.

After a few days, you will feel fine and can resume your normal activities. If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, continuous swelling for 2-3 days or a reaction to medication, call us or the nearest hospital immediately.
